TFSA tracker · Built for Canada

Track your TFSA room before you over-contribute.

The TFSA is generous until you cross the line, and then the CRA charges 1% a month on the excess. Mozaic tracks your contribution room against your real accounts, counts what you have already put in, and warns you before a deposit pushes you over. It is a planning estimate you reconcile with the CRA, not a replacement for it.

TFSA and FHSA room · Over-limit warning · Reconciled with CRA My Account
01 · Start from your real room

Enter your CRA figure, or estimate it

Room tracking lives in the Analytics section, on the Contribution Room tab, and it covers TFSA and FHSA accounts. You set your starting room one of three ways. The most accurate is to type the number straight from CRA My Account or your latest Notice of Assessment, with the date it was current, which Mozaic then treats as authoritative. If you do not have that handy, estimate it from your birth year, adding a residency year if you became a Canadian resident after 2009, and Mozaic adds up the published annual limits from the first year you were eligible. The third option is to enter your total net deposit to date.

The CRA path wins on accuracy for a simple reason: only the CRA knows the room you carried into the app, before any of your accounts were connected. If you have never over-contributed and you have been eligible since 2009, the standalone TFSA contribution room calculator is a quick way to get that starting figure without signing in.

02 · Room that moves with your accounts

Contributions counted, transfers left out

Once your room is set, Mozaic watches the inflows to your registered accounts and counts them as contributions. Not every deposit uses room, so each one is yours to review: a transfer in from another TFSA does not count against your limit, and you switch it off in the review sheet so the running total stays accurate. You can also add contributions Mozaic cannot see, like a deposit made before your account was connected.

03 · Why it is an estimate

Straight about what a tracker can and cannot know

Every figure Mozaic shows here is a planning estimate, not tax advice, and the app repeats that on every room view. Two things keep a tracker from being the last word. Mozaic can only see contributions made after your accounts synced, so anything from before that window has to be entered by hand or captured by your CRA starting figure. And TFSA withdrawals free up room on January 1 of the next year, not the day you withdraw, so mid-year the running number can sit slightly apart from the CRA's.

That is why the CRA figure you enter is the anchor and everything else adjusts around it. Use the tracker to stay on top of your room through the year and to avoid the obvious mistakes. When you are about to make a large contribution, confirm the exact number in CRA My Account first. The CRA is the official source for your contribution room, and Mozaic is built to agree with it, not to replace it.

04 · Before the over-contribution

A warning is worth more than a penalty

The whole point of tracking room is the moment before you cross it. When your contributions approach or pass your limit, Mozaic flags it and reminds you that the CRA charges 1% per month on the highest excess amount for each month it sits in the account. A recontribution of an amount you withdrew earlier in the same year is the classic trap, because the room does not come back until January, and it is exactly what the warning is there to catch.

Your TFSA also sits inside the bigger picture. The same accounts feed your net worth, your investment holdings, and your cash flow, so the room tracker is one view among several rather than a standalone calculator you check once a year and forget.

TFSA tracking questions, answered.

Five questions about tracking TFSA room in Mozaic. For a quick room figure without signing in, use the TFSA contribution room calculator.

Yes. Mozaic has a contribution-room tracker for TFSA and FHSA accounts. It counts the contributions it can see in your synced accounts against a starting room you set, shows how much room is left for the year, and warns you when a contribution would push you over the limit. It tracks TFSA and FHSA only; RRSP and RESP roll into your net worth but do not get room tracking.
You choose one of three ways. Enter your room straight from CRA My Account or your latest Notice of Assessment with an as-of date, which Mozaic treats as your authoritative figure. Estimate it from your birth year and, if you arrived after 2009, your residency year, and Mozaic adds up the published annual limits. Or enter your total net deposit to date. The CRA path is the most accurate because only the CRA knows the room you carried in before your accounts synced.
It is a planning estimate, not tax advice, and the app says so on every room view. Mozaic can only see contributions made after your accounts synced, and withdrawals free up room the following year rather than the same day, so the running figure can drift from the CRA's. Only the figure you enter from CRA My Account is authoritative. Use the tracker to plan and to avoid obvious over-contributions, then confirm the exact number with the CRA before you top up.
A TFSA withdrawal is added back to your contribution room on January 1 of the following year, not the day you take the money out. Mozaic follows that rule in its estimate, so a withdrawal this year restores room next year rather than immediately. If you recontribute a withdrawn amount in the same calendar year without room to cover it, that counts as an over-contribution, which is exactly the mistake the over-limit warning is there to catch.
Mozaic detects inflows to your registered accounts and counts them as contributions by default, then lets you review each one. A transfer from another TFSA does not use room, so you switch it off in the review sheet and the room recalculates. You can also add contributions Mozaic cannot see, such as a deposit from before your account synced. Amounts in another currency are converted to Canadian dollars, which is close enough for a room estimate but one more reason to reconcile with the CRA.
