How much can I contribute to my RRSP for 2026?
Your new 2026 room is 18% of the earned income you reported on your 2025 tax return, up to the 2026 dollar limit of $33,810, minus any pension adjustment from a workplace pension. Add any unused room carried forward from past years to get your total 2026 deduction limit. This calculator does that math for you.
What is the RRSP dollar limit for 2026?
The RRSP dollar limit for 2026 is $33,810, up from $32,490 in 2025. This is the most new room any one person can earn in 2026, and it only applies once your earned income passes about $187,833, since the room is 18% of income up to that ceiling.
How does a pension adjustment reduce my RRSP room?
If you belong to a workplace pension or deferred profit sharing plan, the value of what you earned in it last year, shown as the pension adjustment in box 52 of your T4, is subtracted from your new RRSP room dollar for dollar. It stops you from getting tax-sheltered savings twice on the same income. Enter it above if you have a pension.
Does unused RRSP room carry forward?
Yes. Any room you don't use carries forward indefinitely, so it stacks on top of the new room you earn each year. Your exact carry-forward figure is on your latest CRA Notice of Assessment, or in CRA My Account. Enter it above and this calculator adds it to your 2026 room.
What counts as earned income for the RRSP?
Earned income is mostly employment income (salary and wages before deductions), net self-employment income, and net rental income, plus a few other sources. It is not investment income, most pension income, or capital gains. The RRSP room you build in 2026 is based on the earned income you reported for 2025.
What happens if I over-contribute to my RRSP?
You get a $2,000 lifetime cushion over your deduction limit with no penalty, but it isn't deductible. Beyond that $2,000, the CRA charges 1% per month on the excess for each month it stays in the account. Confirm your exact limit on your Notice of Assessment before contributing near the top of your room.
