01 · The connection
BMO Online Banking, via Plaid's OAuth integration
BMO is one of the major Canadian banks with full Plaid OAuth support. When you pick BMO inside Mozaic, a Plaid-managed popup loads bmo.com and you sign in with your BMO card number (or username) and password the same way you would on BMO Online Banking. If your BMO profile has a security challenge enabled — typically a verification code by SMS or email — that prompts inside BMO's popup. The Mozaic app, the Mozaic backend, and Plaid never see your credentials.
After you authorise the connection, BMO issues a read-only OAuth token to Plaid. Plaid forwards it to Mozaic, your accounts appear in the app within a minute, and a rolling sync schedule keeps them current. The token stays valid for roughly ninety days before BMO requires you to reauthenticate — Mozaic surfaces an in-app reauth nudge ahead of expiry so the connection doesn't quietly fail.
02 · Every BMO account, one roof
Chequing, savings, Mastercards, mortgages, and ReadiLine — all of it
Mozaic reads every product BMO exposes through Plaid. Deposit side: Performance Plan, Premium Plan, Plus, Practical, the Savings Builder and Premium Rate Savings tiered buckets, the US Dollar Premium Savings account, and the TFSA and RRSP cash savings accounts. Credit side: BMO eclipse Visa Infinite, CashBack World Elite Mastercard, AIR MILES World Elite, Preferred Rate Mastercard, CashBack Mastercard, and any business-card lines you hold on the same profile. Liabilities: BMO Homeowner ReadiLine (HELOC), personal lines of credit, and BMO mortgages — each with current rate and principal-paid trend.
The BMO Debit Mastercard sits in the chequing section, not the credit-card section — it's a debit card on the Mastercard network backed by your BMO chequing balance, not a separate liability. Mozaic categorises it as a chequing-tied debit instrument so the chequing balance doesn't get double-counted.

03 · BMO quirks worth knowing
The Debit Mastercard, BMO InvestorLine, and the ReadiLine
The BMO Debit Mastercard trips up other personal-finance apps because it has a Mastercard PAN but isn't a credit card. Mozaic reads it from Plaid as a chequing-tied debit instrument — your chequing balance is the source of funds, and the Mastercard part is just the network used at non-Interac merchants. The result: one chequing balance, no double-counting.
BMO InvestorLine accounts are not part of this connection. InvestorLine lives on a different system from BMO Online Banking and Mozaic reaches it through SnapTrade rather than Plaid. The flow is similar — sign in at BMO, authorise read-only — but the token is held by SnapTrade. Both integrations sit in your Mozaic accounts list and refresh independently.
The BMO Homeowner ReadiLine is BMO's home-equity-line-of-credit product, structured so the line of credit limit grows as the secured mortgage principal pays down. Mozaic reads it as a separate liability from the underlying mortgage — same property, two products — so the cash-flow narrative can tell the fixed-rate mortgage interest apart from the variable-rate HELOC interest.
04 · Beyond the chequing line
BMO sits in a bigger picture once it's connected
BMO is the oldest Canadian bank — founded in 1817 — and the fourth-largest by deposits. For a lot of Mozaic users it's the legacy account; for others it's the primary chequing where the paycheque lands. Either way, the point of connecting BMO isn't to see your BMO balance — BMO Online Banking does that already. The point is to see BMO alongside everything else: your Wealthsimple TFSA, your InvestorLine RRSP, the US-dollar account you keep with BMO Harris for cross-border spending. Mozaic composes them into one net-worth line in your reporting currency, narrates cash flow across the whole picture, and tracks goals against the accounts that fund them.
The institution is just the start of the story — the rest is what your money is doing across institutions.
