How goal progress is calculated

What counts toward a goal, what On Track, Ahead and Behind mean, how the monthly amount is worked out, and when milestone notifications arrive.

A goal's progress is the amount you have so far compared with its target. Mozaic adds up your contributions and your linked accounts, then shows a percentage, a status and, when you set a target date, how much to put aside each month.

What counts toward a goal

The current amount of a goal is:

  • the money you recorded with Add Contribution, plus any starting amount, and
  • the balance of each linked account, converted into the goal's currency when it is held in another one.

From there:

  • Progress is the current amount divided by the target. It stops at 100%.
  • Amount remaining is the target minus the current amount. It never goes below 0.

What the status means

Without a target date, a goal always shows On Track.

With a target date, Mozaic compares your progress with the share of time that has passed between the goal's start and its target date. For example, halfway to the date, you are expected to be around 50%.

The monthly amount

When a goal has a target date, its card shows how much you need each month, for example "$250/mo needed". Mozaic divides the amount remaining by the months left until the target date, counting a month as 30 days and rounding up. On a Debt Payoff goal the same figure reads as a monthly payment. It is hidden once the goal is complete.

The card also shows the time left, such as "5mo left" or "12d left". It reads Reached once you hit the target and Overdue when the target date has passed.

Milestone notifications

Mozaic notifies you in the app when a goal reaches 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. Each milestone is sent once. If you jump past several at once, you get only the highest one.

To turn them off, open Settings, then Notifications under Privacy & Data, and switch off Goal milestones.

If something looks wrong

  • "FX unavailable" or "Status unavailable": a linked account in another currency could not be converted right now. That account counts as 0 for the moment, and a banner reads "Some balances are temporarily incomplete". The monthly amount is hidden and no milestone is sent until conversion works again.
  • Checking which accounts count: click the linked-accounts chip (for example "2 linked") to open Linked accounts and see each account's contribution.
