Base currency and exchange rates

Choose the currency your totals are shown in, see where exchange rates come from, and learn which figures are converted and which are not.

Updated

Your base currency is the currency Mozaic uses to show your totals. It is Canadian dollars (CAD) unless you change it. Your accounts keep their own currency.

Change your base currency

  1. Go to Settings > Preferences > Currency.
  2. Under Choose your display currency, pick one of these seven currencies: USD, CAD, EUR, GBP, AUD, JPY or CHF.

Choose one of these seven. Other currencies are not supported as a base currency.

Where exchange rates come from

Mozaic uses exchange rates published by the European Central Bank, updated once a day. If a new rate isn't available, a rate up to 7 days old is used instead.

On the dashboard, a converted amount can show how it was worked out, for example the original amount times the rate, marked as today's rate.

What is converted and what isn't

Converted to your base currency Added as recorded, not converted
Net worth, assets and liabilities Budgets
Investment returns on the Performance tab Cash Flow

Budgets and Cash Flow add up amounts in the currency they were recorded in. If you have accounts in more than one currency, keep that in mind when you read those totals.

Investment returns are converted at today's rate, not the rate of each past day. See the related article on investment returns.

Canadian registered accounts use CAD

Canadian registered accounts, such as a TFSA, RRSP or FHSA, must be in CAD. If you try to set another currency, you'll see Canadian accounts must use CAD.

If something looks wrong

  • A note says balances were left out of your net worth: no exchange rate was available for their currency, so those balances were not added.
  • A budget or cash flow total looks too high or low: it may be adding amounts in different currencies without converting them.
