Adding your first account

The four ways to get your money into Mozaic: connect a bank, connect a brokerage, add an account or asset by hand, or upload a CSV file.

Updated

You can add your first account four ways: connect a bank, connect a brokerage, enter an account or asset yourself, or upload a CSV file. All of them start from the same place.

Where to start

Select Add Account in the sidebar, or Connect your first account on the empty dashboard. The Connect account window opens. From the empty dashboard you can also go straight to Add manually or Import from CSV.

Connect a bank or a brokerage

Connected accounts update on their own. Mozaic uses Plaid for banks and SnapTrade for brokerages. Both connections are read-only: Mozaic can see your balances and transactions, but it can't move money.

  1. In Connect account, search for your institution with Search institutions, or pick it from Popular institutions.
  2. For a bank, a Plaid window opens where you sign in to your bank. For a brokerage, the page goes to SnapTrade, where you sign in to your broker, then comes back to Mozaic.
  3. Mozaic imports your accounts in the background. They can take a few minutes to appear.

Some institutions can connect both ways. Mozaic then asks what you want to connect and marks one option Recommended.

Connecting works during your 14-day trial and with an active subscription. After the trial, on the free plan, connecting needs a subscription. See pricing for the plans.

To check whether your institution is supported, see supported institutions.

Add an account or asset by hand

Manual accounts and assets are free on every plan. You update their balances yourself.

  1. In Connect account, select Add manually at the bottom.
  2. Under What are you adding?, choose Bank or investment account for chequing, savings, a credit card, a TFSA or an RRSP, among others. For something you own, choose an asset category such as Real estate or Vehicle.
  3. Fill in the form and save.

Debts like a mortgage or a line of credit are added as manual accounts too, with the amount you owe.

Upload a CSV file

If your bank isn't supported, or you're moving from another app, you can import a file. CSV import is free on every plan.

  1. In Connect account, select Upload a CSV file at the bottom.
  2. Pick where the file comes from: a statement downloaded from your bank, or an export from Monarch Money.
  3. Upload the file, match it to an account, review and import.

A bank statement file covers one account per upload.

Which should I choose?

  • Want balances and transactions to update on their own? Connect.
  • Institution not supported, or an account you rarely touch? Add it by hand.
  • Want past transactions from a statement or another app? Upload a CSV.

You can mix all three. Each option has its own article with the details.
