Adding and editing a manual account

Track an account you don't want to connect, or one your bank can't link, by entering it yourself. Here is how to create it and keep its balance current.

Updated

A manual account is one you keep up to date yourself. It counts in your net worth like a connected account, but it changes only when you edit it. Use it for an account you prefer not to connect, or for a bank that can't be linked.

Create a manual account

  1. Click Add Account in the sidebar or on the Accounts page.
  2. At the bottom of the window, under the other ways to add, click Add manually.
  3. Under What are you adding?, choose Bank or investment account.
  4. In Add Manual Account, pick an Account Type (see below).
  5. Enter an Account Name, the Balance (or Amount Owed for a debt), and the Currency.
  6. Save. The account appears on the Accounts page with the status Manual.

Account types you can choose

Type Use it for
Cash Cash on hand
Checking A chequing account
Savings A savings account
TFSA, RRSP, RESP Canadian registered accounts
Investment A non-registered investment account
Credit A credit card
Line of Credit A line of credit
Mortgage A mortgage
Student Loan A student loan

A few rules:

  • TFSA, RRSP and RESP must use CAD. Mozaic shows Canadian accounts must use CAD if you pick another currency.
  • FHSA and margin accounts are not in this list. A margin account comes in when you connect your brokerage.
  • For a debt, enter what you owe as a positive number. Use a negative number only for a credit balance, when the lender owes you.

Edit a manual account

Click the account to open its panel, then open the ⋯ menu (Quick Actions):

  • Rename changes the name (up to 255 characters). Click Save.
  • Update balance asks for the balance as it stands today. You see Balance updated when it is saved, and the status becomes Edited [time].

For a manual investment account, the panel also has Add holding, so you can list what you own. Once it has holdings, Update balance asks for the Cash balance only, because holdings are counted separately.

To bring in past transactions from a bank statement, use Import from CSV in the same menu.

Other things you can add by hand

A house, a car or other valuables are assets, not accounts. In the Add manually window, pick a category such as Real estate or Vehicle instead of Bank or investment account.
