Connecting a bank account

Link your bank through Plaid so balances and transactions update on their own. Here is how to connect, what you see while it works, and what to do if it stops.

Updated

You connect a bank from the Add Account button. Mozaic opens a secure Plaid window where you sign in to your bank, then imports your accounts in the background.

Note: Connecting an account needs a free trial or an active subscription. If your plan does not allow it, Mozaic shows an upgrade prompt instead of the bank list. See pricing.

Connect your bank

  1. Click Add Account. It is in the sidebar, at the top of the Accounts page, and on the dashboard when you have no accounts yet (Connect your first account).
  2. In the Connect account window, type your bank's name in Search institutions, or pick it from Popular institutions.
  3. If your bank can be connected more than one way, Mozaic asks What would you like to connect? Choose the option marked Recommended unless you know you need the other one.
  4. The Plaid window opens. Sign in with your online-banking username and password, and answer any security question or code your bank asks for.
  5. When Plaid is done, you see Bank connected. We're importing your accounts now.

Your credentials go to your bank through Plaid. They never reach Mozaic, and the connection is read-only: Mozaic can see your accounts but cannot move money.

While your accounts import

A banner on the Accounts page shows the progress:

  • Importing your accounts from [bank name]. The import is running.
  • Your [bank name] accounts have not arrived yet. It is taking longer than usual. Check back in a few minutes.
  • [bank name] is connected, but we could not bring in your accounts. The link worked but the import did not.

If your bank later opens a new account for you, a New accounts available banner appears. Click Add accounts to bring it in.

If you already connected this bank

Mozaic checks for an existing connection first. If it finds one, the Already Connected window warns that adding the bank again may create duplicate accounts. If the existing connection is broken, click Reconnect Now instead of Continue Anyway: that repairs the connection you have.

If something looks wrong

  • Bank connection was cancelled or failed. The Plaid window was closed or the bank refused the sign-in. Try again.
  • 2-step verification is blocking this connection. Some banks refuse the connection when 2-step verification is on. You can add the account by hand instead (see the manual accounts article) and keep your bank security as it is.
  • RBC: the bank list shows Usually fails if 2-step verification is on at RBC. Read our RBC page before you connect.
  • What kind of account is this? Your bank's account name did not say. Click Set account type. Until you do, that account is not counted in your net worth.

To check whether your bank is supported before you start, see supported institutions.
