Understanding your investment returns

Go to Analytics > Performance to see how your investments are doing. The page covers your investment accounts only.

The numbers at the top

• Portfolio value: what your holdings are worth today, with their Cost basis underneath.
• Unrealized P&L: your gain or loss on the holdings you still own, all time.
• Time-weighted: your return for the selected period, compared with a benchmark ("vs XIU.TO").
• Day Change: how much your portfolio moved today.

Below them, the Holdings table lists each position. See the related article on holdings for what each column means.

Time-weighted return, in plain terms

A time-weighted return measures how well your investments performed, not how much money you added or took out.

Here is how Mozaic works it out:

1. For each day, it takes the price change of your holdings, weighted by how much each one is worth, plus any dividends.
2. Positions you bought or sold during the period are left out of that calculation.
3. The daily returns are chained together over the period.

Because of step 2, a large deposit or withdrawal doesn't make your return look better or worse than it was.

Note: Amounts in other currencies are converted to your base currency at today's exchange rate. Past rates are not used, so currency moves over the period can show up in the result.

The chart shows total return rebased to 100, with dividends reinvested, so every line starts at the same point. The time-weighted figure at the top is compared with XIU.TO.

Dividends

There is no separate dividends page. Dividends appear as transactions in the Dividend Income category on the Transactions page, and they are included in your time-weighted return.
