Credit cards, loans and mortgages
How debts show in Mozaic, how to enter what you owe, and how to add the limit, rate and payment terms of a credit card, loan or mortgage.
Updated
Credit cards, lines of credit, loans and mortgages are liabilities. Mozaic lists them under the Liabilities tab of the Accounts page and subtracts them from your net worth. Each debt can also carry details such as its rate and payments, in the Liability Details section of the account panel.
Enter what you owe
When you add a debt by hand (types Credit, Line of Credit, Mortgage or Student Loan), the form asks for Amount Owed instead of Balance.
- Enter what you owe as a positive number: a $2,000 card balance is
2000. - Use a negative number only for a credit balance, when the lender owes you.
- When the amount changes, open the account panel, then ⋯ > Update balance.
Add details to a manual debt
- Click the debt on the Accounts page to open its panel.
- In Liability Details, click Add details (or Edit details if some are already saved).
- Fill in what you know. Every field is optional, so leave blank what you do not know.
- Save. You see Details saved.
The fields depend on the type of debt:
| Debt | Fields |
|---|---|
| Credit card or line of credit | Credit limit, APR, Minimum payment, Next payment due |
| Mortgage | Interest rate, Rate type (Fixed or Variable), Original loan amount, Monthly payment, Loan term, Start date, Maturity date |
| Student loan | Interest rate, Minimum payment, Servicer, Next payment due, Expected payoff date, original amount, Start date |
For a mortgage, take the terms from your mortgage agreement.
Debts connected through your bank
For a credit card, loan or mortgage connected through your bank, the details come from the bank and show as read-only in the same section. What appears depends on what your bank shares: for example the credit limit, interest rate, payment amounts and key dates. You can't edit these by hand.
If nothing is shown, you see one of these:
- No additional liability details: your bank did not send any.
- Reconnect your bank to load liability details: reconnect the bank, then check again.
If something looks wrong
- The debt raises your net worth instead of lowering it: check that you entered the amount owed as a positive number.
- The balance and the details disagree: the account's balance is the one Mozaic counts. Update it with Update balance.
